Oakland Volunteers Make it a “Day On” for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Thousands of youth and adult volunteers from across the nation will participate in a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In Oakland, over twenty community cleaning, greening, and beautification projects are planned and more than 2,000 volunteers are expected to participate.

Oakland, CA – Thousands of youth and adult volunteers from across the nation will participate in a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In Oakland, over twenty community cleaning, greening, and beautification projects are planned and more than 2,000 volunteers are expected to participate.

What: 17th Annual Oakland Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

When: Monday, January 21, 2019, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Where 30 Oakland locations (see table below)

Who: Over 2,000 volunteers

Large numbers of volunteers are expected to turn out at Fruitvale District, Sobrante Park Neighborhood, Lakeside Park Gardens at Lake Merritt, MLK Regional Shoreline, and Morcom Rose Garden,

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is sponsored by Service for Peace and The Corporation for National and Community Service. Service for Peace has organized this annual event in Oakland for 17 years.

Oakland projects are being conducted through partnerships between Oakland Public Works, Oakland Unified School District, Oakland City Council Members, Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation, AmeriCorps, East Bay Regional Parks District, Lake Merritt Institute, Friends of Sausal Creek, Higher Ground Neighborhood Development Corporation, and other community organizations.

Volunteers are asked to bring water, and wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate gear. MLK Day is a rain or shine event.
