Stay Safe During New Year’s Celebrations

Oakland, CA –The Oakland Police Department encourages our community to celebrate this New Year’s Eve safely and would like to remind everyone of the dangers and penalties associated with driving under the influence (DUI), celebratory gunfire and the use of illegal fireworks.

The Department has increased staffing and will be deploying additional officers throughout the City focusing on stopping DUI drivers, illegal gun use and illegal fireworks activity.

• There will be Zero tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.

• Officers will arrest anyone caught discharging a firearm.

• Citations and or arrests will occur if anyone is found in possession or igniting illegal fireworks.

Report drunk drivers, gunfire, including celebratory gunfire by calling 911 or from a cell phone: (510) 777-3211.

Those caught with fireworks, even the “Safe & Sane” brand, will be fined up to $1,000. Possession of large quantities of fireworks carry penalties of $5,000 to $10,000 and imprisonment.
